Taffie
Chandler Bridge, Oligocene. Thought this might be a whale or dugong bone. It's about 2" x 1 1/2" and about 1/4" thick (approx). Any help appreciated. Edited October 25, 2011 by Taffie
Carl
The close detail makes me think it isn't fossil bone. But even if it is, I doubt there would be enough there to decide between cetacean or sirenian.
bear-dog
Having dug up my share of dugong/manatee,I can tell you if that is bone[i don't think so] it would be whale. Bear-dog.
Sharks of SC
Another direction to look - the striations remind me of the terminal vertebrae (tail vert.) of a large fish - tuna or marlin. I've got a few examples - I'll see if I can't dig them out tonight and take a few quick photos. Happy Hunting, CBK

PaleoRon
It appears to be a water-worn rock.
Boesse
It doesn't look like bone at all - instead, it appears to be a phosphate nodule. Bobby
