lea125
This "rock" has been in the family for years. My late Grandmother picked it up at some lake in Texas. I don't know enough to identify it as a rock or fossil. I also took a close up picture with a microscopic camera. So, what do ya'll think? Rock?? Fossil? You can tell by the paint on it that it was also used as a door stop at my grandmothers house. Thanks in advance for any help, Lea
jpc
Looks like a chert nodule to me... that means rock not fossil.
Auspex
Looks like a chert nodule to me... that means rock not fossil. That, or a piece of bizarrely weathered limestone (I've seen weirder); see whether it reacts at all with a drop of vinegar. RichW9090
I agree. I'm not seeing anything that looks like bone. It does look like a low-grade chert nodule, which oft times do have holes through them. The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".

lea125
I tried the vinegar on several places and there was no reaction. I'm pretty sure its not limestone.
Missourian
There appears to be small bits of something within it. Can you tell if they are fossils? Context is critical.
lea125
I can't tell if there are fossils inside the rock. I did take some more pictures with the microscopic camera in the middle of a break. Does that help?
Generalnotes
It look like "Texas Holy Rock" to me. Limestone found near Austin hill country.
Missourian
Oh, that would so be coming home with me if I found that. Context is critical.
lea125
It look like "Texas Holy Rock" to me. Limestone found near Austin hill country. holy rock.jpg Yes, I know about those rocks and wondered if that was it. We used to have some with an aquarium but I still see areas in my rock that seem to look odd. Does your rock react with vinegar?
Generalnotes
That isn't my rock. Just a photo off the web. Try a drop of vinegar overnight and see if it soften the stone in that area.
