Help With Small Vertibrae Id

Chippewa

Recommended Posts

Hello. This small fossil was found on the beach in Northeast Florida. Any help with ID is appreciated!

It is an odd shape, and it has two holes about 1/16 " that go through it - one on each side of the piece. post-7483-0-77978100-1370232292_thumb.jpgpost-7483-0-22614900-1370232696_thumb.jpgpost-7483-0-19899600-1370232397_thumb.jpgpost-7483-0-32256500-1370232615_thumb.jpg

This is a mesethmoid from a tuna or mackerel. These are commonly called "bonito noses" because they come from the front end of the fish's skull.

That is an uncommonly fine example: most are pretty thoroughly worn.
