gturner333
In bulk sampling from the Jacksboro, Tx Lost Creek Reservoir area, which is Pennsylvanian, I came across a disk and a tooth-shaped fossil. The tooth-shaped fossil has an edge broken off, which gives it a square look. It reminds me of some Permian teeth I have, but this is neither Permian nor amphibian/reptile area. So, is it a beaten-up shark tooth, petrified wood, or what? I have no idea about the disk shaped object. Thanks for your consideration.
PA Fossil Finder
The disk shaped object looks like a prickly pear cactus seed. Stephen
gturner333
It didn't float in water so I didn't think of a seed. After checking the web and after I scratched the surface, I think you're right. Thanks Now, any ideas on the other?
DPS Ammonite
I think that the tooth-like piece is not a fossil tooth. It appears to be a suggestively shaped and polished cobble of quartz that has many linear cracks that are stained by iron deposited by groundwater. The dark stain is not tooth enamel. You would expect to find the dark enamel only on the original outer surface of the tooth. Where the cobble is freshly broken in the 2nd and 3rd photo, the iron has not reached the center. In the 2nd photo, the iron covered the older break(left side) in the cobble. My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.
