New Members jubugm Posted August 20, 2019 New Members Share Posted August 20, 2019 Does anyone know what kind of mushroom? Seems to be petrified like wood.
El_Hueso
I think we already had a topic like this. As far as I know, there has never been a case of a mushroom being petrified. Also, please post clear pictures from every angle, and with a ruler. Also it's helpful to give us more information involving where and how you found it. What's the geology of the area? It's impossible to identify a specimen by one single photo. Also welcome to the board!
New Members jubugm Posted August 20, 2019 Author New Members Share Posted August 20, 2019 What type of mushroom would this be then? It's hard and definitely a mushroom.
Fossildude19
Can we see a picture of the other side, and the underside of the cap? My first guess would be something man-made, as the holes/air bubbles in the cap look like they are from a casting process of some sort. Rotated and Brightened: Also, where exactly was this found, and what is the size of it? FossilNerd
My vote is also for man made. However... Here is an old topic regarding a mushroom that appeared to be fossilized (there are a few of them). I believe the ID came down to a “stone making fungus” only found in Australia. From your tags, I see you found yours in Michigan so I doubt that it is the same thing. A good read none the less. Also, some fungi tend to get pretty hard when they dry out. Im still in the man made camp, but wanted to throw that out there. More pictures, as others suggested, would help. 1 The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it. -Neil deGrasse Tyson Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't. -Bill Nye (The Science Guy)
