Diplurus scale

Fossildude19

Scale from the Early Jurassic fish, Diplurus longicaudatus.

Shuttle Meadow Fm. CT

Scale in cm.

There are four genera of fish found the Hartford Basin.

Semionotus sp. - the most commonly found fish. (There are many different species of Semionotids found in the Newark Supergroup.)

Redfieldius gracilis - the second most commonly found fish. Apparently a bit more common in the Shuttle Meadow formation than the Portland or East Berlin formations.

Ptycholepis marshi - are the second most rarely found fish.

Diplurus longicaudatus is the rarest fish found in the Hartford Basin.

It is also the largest fish found in the Hartford Basin,... sometimes as long as 3 feet.

In 15 years of hunting the Shuttle Meadow and East Berlin formations, I have found 2 diplurus scales.

Their coprolites are more commonly found than actual fish parts. I guess they pooped alot.

I believe there have only been a total of 10 complete specimens of Diplurus longicaudatus found to date.
