Redfieldius gracilis skull and front of body.
Early Jurassic Shuttle Meadow Formation.
Connecticut.
Fairly well preserved front half of fish.
This is a shot of this fish before prep
You can clearly see the tubercles and teeth on the front part of the skull. It's believed that these supported a fleshy upper lip.
The jaw/mouth and eye socket are quite visible as well.
I am unsure if the width of the body on this specimen is due to pre-fossilization bloating, some artifact of diagenesis, or if this is an extremely robust individual.
This is probably my best preserved skull from a Redfieldius.
I may try to prep it out a bit more, once I get my air abrasion unit up and running.
