Capybara

calhounensis

Astragali from two species of Neochoerus. The smaller is N. pinckneyi, and the other is a much larger species that I have not found any information on.

Neochoerus is really in need of major revision. Neochoerus pinkneyi (which is actually a synonym of Neochoerus aesopi, which is diagnosable and has priority) is the larger of the two species of Neochoerus. The other is Neochoerus dichroplax, known from Arizona and Florida. N. dichroplax appears to be a Blancan-only species, while N. aesopi runs from the Blancan (the type, from South Carolina, is actuallyBlancan, not Rancholabrean as usually assumed) to the Rancholabrean.

Can I assume then that the smaller astragalus was mislabeled, and would actually be N. dichroplax, the larger being N. aesopi? Do have any knowledge of papers written or in the works that focus on Neochoerus?
