Turbo castanea f. tiara
Order Archaeogastropoda
Family Turbinidae
Turbo castanea Gmelin, 1791 form tiara M. Smith, 1936
Location: APAC, Sarasota County, Florida USA.
Notes: Smith (1936) originally described this species as Turbo castanea tiara. Petuch (1994) raised this to species without explanation and named a subspeices of it T. tiara duerri so the exact indentity is confused. Turbo castanea is an extant species which shows a great deal of variation in the size of nodes including individuals similar to form tiara. According to the World Registry of Marine Species (WoRMS) no subspecies of T. castanea is accepted. I list this as a form only to show the degree of variation in the fossil population.
