Calippus elachistus was described in 1988 prompted by specimens from the Love Site near Gainesville, Florida. The specimens are dated to the latest Clarendonian (NALMA). C. elachistus is the youngest known member of the subgenus C. (Calippus). Although based on only a few specimens, C. elachistus apparently persisted into the late early Hemphillian (about 6 to 6.5 ma) of Florida without significant morphological change.
