How did this petrified wood get these colors?   Any idea what minerals caused the colors?20200328_215624.thumb.jpg.3d93bd09fa964387f39a8f10a628c67d.jpg

I got this piece from an Idaho Auction. It was completely raw, untouched and dirty. I cut the top and sides to reveal an outstanding array if colors!!! After that, I cleaned the rest. You can see the grain clearly now. Thank you, enjoy!!!

What makes petrified wood colorful?

It's not wood that makes petrified wood colorful, but the chemistry of the petrifying groundwater. Minerals such as manganese, iron, and copper were in the water/mud during the petrification process. These minerals give petrified wood a variety of color ranges. Quartz crystals are colorless, but when iron is added to the process the crystals become stained with a yellow or red tint.

Following is a list of minerals and related color hues:

Copper - green/blue
Cobalt - green/blue
Chromium - green/blue
Manganese - pink
Carbon - black
Iron Oxides - red, brown, yellow
Manganese Oxides - black
Silica - white, grey

Cheers.
