Barby
I am looking for info on a turtle which I have heard called a "helmet turtle". Mine is truly shaped like a helmet--fat and rounded--does not look like a stelemys... ...found in SD. I once saw a similarly shaped one in NE, but it wasn't worth collecting. I just want--at this point--to know if such a thing exists. If I can get affirmative info, I'll send pix. Thank you.

Why -- shouldn't this be in "Fossil ID"? Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Randyw
Personally I always thought stelemys Nebrascensis looked more like a helmet then the other varieties of stelemys. I had a friend who used to refer to them as a “helmet“ turtle But I don’t know if that’s just what he called them or wether he heard the name from somewhere else. They were found in Nebraska, s.d, and other localities... Online photo below for comparison..
jpc
These turtles get squished. I have some that are helmetty as well as some that are more pancakey and some that are completely lop-sided. I don't think the helmet shape is a taxonomic chancteristic
