Top Trilo
A couple years ago I was on vacation in Wayne county Ohio, and I stepped on something in a lake I picked it up and found this. Originally, I thought it was a shell piece, but when I looked again it looked like a trilobite because of the three lines. I know it’s partial so I’m unsure if I’ll get an ID but I hope I do. Ignore the scratch marks, I tried uncovering more but the rock is very hard and impossible to clear with a small tool. “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. Fossildude19
Looks more like a brachiopod, to me. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Top Trilo
It’s hard to see in the photos but there are the three sections for trilobite. Top Trilo
Would it be possible to say what kind of brachiopod it is, 3 brachiopod species have been found around there, spirifer, dictyoclostus, and chonetes. Tidgy's Dad
'spirifer' 'dictyoclostus' and 'chonetes' are not species. Genera, though the first and last are often used to describe larger taxa. I would tend to lean more towards a productid; so Dictyoclostus would fit the best of your three. But i'm not saying it is. Can't see enough of it. 2 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

Mark Kmiecik
One other thing is the lack of bilateral symmetry one would expect to see in a trilobite. Left and right sides should be close to a mirror image of each other. A partial portion of one side should reflect the same portion of the other, unless only one side of the trilobite is represented. Top Trilo
I now know that this is a brachiopod but as I was looking around the back of the rock I got some more questions, Is this coprolite or plant material? If this piece is a fossil what is it or is it just a rock or an unidentifiable fossil chunk are these imprints of anything or just pareidolia? Also on the front the brachiopod is in this light colored rock is it made differently than the surrounding rock? Top Trilo
I have no clue about the possible coprolites, the imprints I'm not too confident in but the first one of the imprints looks like an opened bivalve. As far as the black piece, Im leaning towards fossil. I tried scratching it with my nail it didn't come off. Its also smooth which has me thinking fossil, I just don't know what it could be. Top Trilo
Thanks @Fossildude19 but are you saying the things that look like coprolites are mineral staining or the black part or both? “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. Fossildude19
Pictures aren't detailed enough to make a good ID, but I think most of it is mineral staining. 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."
