Rockwood Posted October 30, 2020 Share Posted October 30, 2020 While it isn't impossible that some alien (unnatural) force preserved tortoise shell this way, I think the odds favor iron combining with sulfur in the absence of oxygen (the usual way) as the way this formed. Please post some higher resolution photos of the objects and give us more precise information on stratigraphy and location. Mahnmut Posted October 30, 2020 Share Posted October 30, 2020 Well, pyritized reptile bones are not unheard of. The chemical milieu around a decaying animal sometimes favours the formation of pyrite. But I do not see anything turtle-like in this picture either.
