Peace River Mammal Tooth, Large-ish Molar?

Bone Daddy

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I've made two trips to the river in the last week and most of what I have found was the usual stuff. This mammal tooth is eluding me when it comes to ID. It's a little banged up, but I think enough of the crown is intact to facilitate an ID, but I can't find anything that looks close.

Anyone know what critter this is? It does appear to be fossil and not recent.

Thanks!

MikeG

PS - a proper trip report and more photos coming later.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I had thought tapir, but wasn't sure. Teeth are my achilles heel when it comes to ID......Ok, honestly, a lot of things are. LOL. But, teeth really give me trouble. I've right-clicked and saved some of Harry's informative captioned photos for ID purposes, but a lot of these teeth just look alike to me. I was hoping it was something sexier like a felid or dire wolf, but I'll take tapir. It's only the second tapir tooth I have found.  :)

  • 2 weeks later...

The ID of this tooth may be tapirus but if the cube is 1cm it would make this tooth about 15mm long, a mighty small tapir
