Brandy Cole
Found in South Texas. I still have a hard time distinguishing between more rounded proboscidean bones, even after looking at the University of Michigan's excellent mastodon examples. I think this one best resembles a patella, but I'm unsure

Brandy Cole
@JohnJ It looks roughly similar to your pictures, I'm just not 100 percent sure the shapes all match up. Is it possible it's a foot sesamoid instead? Or do you think patella is more likely?

I'm not seeing the articulation 'saddle' on yours that you see in my 3rd and 4th photos...maybe I'm missing it. Proboscidean foot bones are wonderfully odd, chunky, and mysterious. I would rule them out first, if possible. 1 The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
Family Fun
Hi Brandy, here is a patella I found on the peace river last year, maybe you can use these pictures to compare. I wasn't able to determine if it was mastodon or mammoth. Rick
Brandy Cole
@Family Fun Thank you! Those pics were helpful to see different angles. @JohnJ I've been thinking about this one for a while and going back and forth. Based on the examples here, I'm pretty sure patella doesn't fit, and I'm leaning toward a mammoth unciform. Thank you for the help! 1 1
