I came across this in a pile rocks under and around a tree in a vacant lot.

Reminds me of a large bone.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Looks like a piece of resistant limestone or chert after limestone. Are those fossil inclusions?

Here are a few close up photos.

I really don't know what it is.

The shape is like a mammoth upper joint but it is small for that.

Could be just an interesting rock.

It is certainly an interesting shape, but it is not a bone.  Some of the inclusions might be fossils, but it's hard to tell from these photos.

Plax and John,

Thank you for your replies and information. Seems I have an interesting door stop.

There's a good possibility there are fossils within that piece of stone. The last two pics are suggestive of a bivalve or nautiloid impression. If you are using it for a door stop that's fine but if you're comfortable with a hammer, with safety glasses, I'd give it a wack.

It has a small number of what seem like bits of shell and not much more inside.

I have saved a few pieces and will get them under the microscope soon.

+1 for chert

Nifty piece.  I'd keep it
