MarkGelbart
I've always wondered what the fishing would have been like during the Ice Age before people came and pretty much ruined it. This is a field of paleontology that I'm guessing is overlooked--pleistocene fish specimens are mostly still extant, so they're, of course, ignored when lying next to something spectacular like a mammoth tooth. Pleistocene fish bones get stuck in back drawers, if not discarded altogether, but I'm interested in this. Does anybody that posts here have any specimens of Pleistocene (or Pliocene) fish bones? I just recently studied a comprehensive volume about the local fish fauna near where I live, and I discuss some of the interesting facts I found about fish on my blog--http://markgelbart.wordpress.com ********************************************************************************************************** http://stores.lulu.com/GeorgiaBeforePeople Edited March 23, 2010 by MarkGelbart
oilshale
Hi Mark, not really uncommon: There is a very interesting thread about Pleistocene fish from Canada http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?showtopic=12178 And there are lots of Pliocene fishes coming from the Fiume Marecchia near Rimini and other locations in Italy: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images§ion=viewimage&img=8120 http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images§ion=viewimage&img=8039 http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images§ion=viewimage&img=8088 From Hazen Nevada: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images§ion=viewimage&img=8299 From Willershausen Germany: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images§ion=viewimage&img=8110 http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images§ion=viewimage&img=8121 http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images§ion=viewimage&img=8123 just to mention a few.... MarkGelbart
Thanks, those are some great websites. Even though this thread is supposed to be about fish, I'm in awe of the picture of that giant camel from Lake Manix. It's hard to imagine that the American southwest, so dry today, was once a pleasant enivironment with lots of lakes. The History Channel has a series about geology (I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head) and it featured Lake Manix in one episode.
