johnnyvaldez7.jv
So this has been staring at me on the shelf for sometime waiting for an ID. Jokes aside...I found this on a SE Texas gravel bank...thought it was real peculiar looking...seemed to me to look like a coprolite...it has an unusual shape to it with markings all around...and if it isn't...what could it be much less the rectangular piece in the photographs? I thought maybe the small piece was bone or something. And the whole thing is solid as a rock and heavy. Sorry the pics are so close...wanted to get the details. Lone Hunter
@GeschWhat. This is the person to decide, it certainly checks off a few boxes. Have to repeat what's been said already your pictures are just stunning.
Rockwood
I'm leaning toward phosphate concretion, but I wouldn't argue about it with Lorie or @Carl.
Carl
I can't say it's not a coprolite, but I'm not at all seeing enough detail for it to be convincing. Was it found near abundant vertebrate fossils?
johnnyvaldez7.jv
Yes...every mammal piece I've posted so far has all been from the same small section of the Colorado River. And with the help of the great members here I seem to have a variety of mammals. This piece was found with all the rest.
JohnJ
Will a knife scratch it? The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
johnnyvaldez7.jv
And yes JohnJ a knife will scratch it. Not deep at all tho. Not even close...it barely scratches it after several attempts with the point of a knife. It's heavy and dense.
johnnyvaldez7.jv
But then when you wipe it away (no pun intended) you can't really even see the scratch mark. And are these inclusions I think they're called?
johnnyvaldez7.jv
Also I seem to find alot of these on the banks...some much more dense than others. But all seem to have some shape in common.
Carl
Really had to tell from photos, sadly. Is there a nearby museum to which you could bring them?

johnnyvaldez7.jv
In the 4th picture could this be a bone fragment if this is indeed a coprolite? It seems like an inclusion.

To me it looks more like a partial whorl of a gastropod.
GeschWhat
I'm with @Carl on this. I really can't say one way or another. 1 1 Lori www.areallycrappystory.com/fossils www.facebook.com/fossilpoo
