cabes234
Hello everyone, I recently went on a trip to the fossil sight in Centralia Pennsylvania the sight was absolutely incredible practically every rock had some kind of a fossil in it and many of them had mineralized white which contrasted really well with the dark rocks they were on. We found many instances of Ferns (pictures 1-3), we also found a lot of what looked like bark (pictures 4-6) and also what seems like a large pumpkin seed, around 3/4ths of an inch by 1/3rd of an inch (picture 7). I know that Identifying plant fossils not as simple as it is for animal remains but I was wondering if anyone knows what these are, any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Fossildude19
Looks like you did well there. The first few ferns look like Neuropteris sp. The second item looks like a bit of Sigillaria sp bark. Third item looks like Lepidodendron sp. bark. 4th item looks like a piece of Stigmaria sp., with rootlets attached. The last item may be a seed, something like Trigoncarpus sp. Neat finds. The pyrophyllite shows up well on the black shale. Thanks for posting these. 1 3 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." paleoflor
Given the honeycomb-like structures on the Sigillaria, you may want to compare it with S. elegans and allied species (see for example this ID table). 1 Searching for green in the dark grey. cabes234
I actually have one more fossil that I would like identified, I cannot make heads or tails of it, it seems like it could be a small section of bark but I am not quite sure. I am also not sure how well it will come out on a photo.
