Found this fossil in the Haw River of Chatham County, NC

Museum contact in Fla. replied:

 

Our paleobotanist states “To me they look like the underground stem and nodules of horsetail, Equisteum.” That is all we can do here. Perhaps your next step is to find a specialist in Paleozoic plant fossils.

Googling Equisetum root system certainly does show some similarity. I guess an expert in early Mesozoic plants would be as good a a Paleozoic plant expert. Calamites are horsetail like plants.

Mesozoic would be the way to go, as I'm pretty sure this is Triassic in age.

Unfortunately, I just discovered my one Triassic paleobotanist contact had passed away nearly 2 years ago. :shakehead:

Did you ever find an answer as to what you found? I found one this weekend with the same exact markings.
