Mikrogeophagus

Hey everyone! This came from the same Ozan spot as my previous post. I found this little specimen on a gravel bar. I think it's a fossil, but it could be man-made... I'm really not sure. My best guess is a pycnodont tooth plate which would be a first for me. I have hesitations because the teeth are "holey" as opposed to little black bulbs. Maybe this is from weathering? Here are some pictures:

Not man made, I'm pretty sure that you are correct and that this is a fish mouth plate, probably from a pycnodont.

Nice find. :Smiling:

WOW! Pycnodont indeed! That’s a tough find in the Ozan here

Hi,

Agree with the others. The teeth seem "pierced" because you see the bottom !

Thanks for the confirmations! It’s really cool to finally have a pycnodont plate. For some reason I made a lot of fishy firsts this most recent trip! :tff:

Funny/Sad update: I took a group of non-fossilhunting friends out to this same spot today. I brought an assortment of the fossils I found there (including this one) with me to show them what sort of things to look for. It was a fun day out on the creek and we managed to score some cool finds (a big ptychodus tooth, mosasaur bone, etc.) which hopefully inspired them. When I got back to my home, I realized that I must have misplaced this fossil somewhere back at the creek where it was originally from. It's labeled in a little coin sleeve and everything too. Funny to imagine some future hunter coming across it identified, prepackaged, and all.
