Golfer
Identification of 2 New Hampshire rocks found near bedrock level. One has a light orange color. The other has a brownish color with tiny inclusions on one side. Found on edge of forest on former farm land. I think the brownish one could be granite. The light orange one I have been researching and getting different answers. Not magnetic. See photos for size and weight. Thank you for your time. Myrmica
I would suggest that the first is a quartz pebble and the second may be an eroded piece of porphyry.
Golfer
What are the inclusions in the brownish rock? I looked up photos of rocks that looked like the orange rock and see it might be a hematoid?
DPS Ammonite
This rock is a breccia with a matrix of an iron-colored sandstone. Clasts are likely quartz. See if a metal knife blade can scratch the white clasts. 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. FranzBernhard
First is most probably a quartz pebble. Coloration comes from very, very tiny amounts of "limonite", most likely represented by the mineral goethite (FeO(OH)). Second one is most probably a breccia to coarse grained sandstone. Porphyry it not very high up in the list. Franz Bernhard
Golfer
The white clasts on the brownish rock do not scratch with a sharp metal knife. Mr. Bernhard you mentioned limonite on the first subject I posted about a horned shaped ironstone concretion I found. Thanks to all for your interest.
