New Members Squidpastry Posted December 15, 2022 New Members Share Posted December 15, 2022 Hello! I've been eyeing this fossil for a little while now, and I'm itching to purchase it. The seller has identified this fossil as a pair of Jianghanichthys, from Liaoning, China. The seller also says that they're from the Eocene. I'm thinking these are misidentified- those spiny fin rays being the most notably "off" feature of this fossil. The one on the right may actually be Jianghanichthys, but really without knowing exactly where these were found and when, I've got no idea! This is a wild guess, but Serranus maybe? Thank you all in advance!

oilshale
Tungtingichthys gracilis Liu, Liu et Tang 1962 from the Eocene of Hunan. I wrote to the dealer some time ago that Jianghanichthys is wrong, but he didn't care. RJB
Years ago I used to sell a lot of a Genus of fish called Jianghanichthys and it looked nothing like this. I'm sure there are other species of Jianghanichthys but really dont know if this is one? Some research is in order me thinks. Best of luck RB
