How do I preserve this?

I believe I found some trace worm burrows in clay… Lincoln Creek Formation in WA. unfortunately the dried clay makes it very unstable, some of the burrows are filled in with harder matrix. I’m not sure what to do… any advice would be great!

Those might be teredo sp. borings, found in wood.

With clay you want to lengthen the time it takes to dry your specimen.

When they dry quickly the outer layer reduces in volume, while the inner portion does not, resulting in fissures/cracks forming.

One way to delay the process is to wrap the specimen in dry-moist newspaper and then wrap it all in tin foil. Afterwards poke a handful of holes in the tin with a fork or similar and leave the specimen somewhere cool to dry for 2-3 months.

There is some trial and error involved so just give it a go

Forgot to mention, once dry you can apply a very thin mix of Paraloid B-72 to stabilize the specimen if needed.
