I found a unique fossil in the Ordovician formation, but I'm unsure if it's coral or something else. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm hoping for coral, but it might just be a block of cement with spot on it :s_confused:

Does not look like cement. The bright spots seem to be 3D?

Do you see any microstructures?

I'm  thinking it is some kind of mineral staining.

I don't think this is a fossil.  :(

The circular spots are just a bit 3d almost not perceptibable. I tried a dremel on it, but it almost done nothing the rock is to hard, the dark area is a little bit softer but although also very hard. I was able to even out a small part with an electric belt sander. I can say It is not surface stainning it seams to be more deep in the rock.  Here a photo from before sanding and after sanding.

I'm with an expert here in Quebec. We agree this is mineralization with something to do with deposition and maybe leeching.

Thank you, @Kane, for your input. I completely agree, there are no discernible details that suggest it could be coral. Upon closer examination with a magnifying lens, it appears to have a distinct granular structure. I submitted it for identification because it was out of the ordinary,  It might be something that was deposit there a long time ago by glacier or some other geologic process. I plan to cut it in half and polish it, as this might reveal an intriguing pattern or motif.  ;)

iron rich orbicular olivine gabbronorite ,perhaps.

If so,not particularly biogenic

any red coloration may be enhanced by fungal enzymatic reduction of iron
