What in Tarnation is this fish?

Recommended Posts

I got this fossil fish from Lebanon a few months ago and it came in 4 pieces.  The fossil dealer told me it was Spaniodon.   With what research I did I find out it is not Spaniodon.   With more research I find that I can not find anything like this fish?  Can I ask you folks if you know what species of fish this is?   I'm working on the jaws of this fish which is turning out to be quite the challenge and have a ways to go till its finished but I'm turning this into a video and need this information if possible.  Thank you in advance.

Great fish, whatever it is!  :envy:

Sorry Ron, the fish will be super beautiful, but I have zero idea what it could be.
The picture book is in Arabic (which I don't understand) and the pictures are fuzzy, but there is no matching fish in there.

If anyone ever needs a little Arabic translation (not a whole book!), I would always be very happy to help. :)

it looks vaguely salmoniform,in my humble opinion

if you mixed Gharbouria,Pattersonichthys and Enchodus brevis, a generic berycoid and a halecomorph  into one.it might look a bit like this

edit: it is SLIGHTLY reminiscent of Quetzalichthys ,btw which is not known from Levantine lithographic limestone lagerstatten,I believe

Quite exciting though, to have something clearly pretty unusual. :Jumping:

RJB,you might consider this Spaniodon Latus,"fat morph",and I am being serious.

Infraorbitals 1 and two SHOULD be inflated

edit: if they are preserved/present

a Spaniodon (2,3,4 )as figured by Pictet(public domain)

I think RJB 's fish is partly "smeared out",and /or microbial mats might have someting to do with the preservation as well.

However ,it is NOT disarticulated,as far as I can tell.
