MrR
Greetings all. I recently purchased a tooth that was said to be from the Bakersfield area. It's not that I don't believe that it is from the Temblor formation, or nearby areas, it's just that the tooth itself seems an odd color for Bakersfield. Most teeth that I have seen from there, including those from desmostylus, are much lighter all around. Maybe it hails from elsewhere? Is the color that unusual? Bad desmo hygiene? And what type of minerals in the area might contribute to such color? Manganese oxide perhaps? It seems I remember hearing it was prevalent around Bakersfield. Many thanks in advance. Cheers. MrR
OK, I just looked at some desmostylus teeth being sold online. They have the same coloring and are said to be from the Temblor. So...never mind. Cheers.
siteseer
Yeah, that looks like it's from the locality near Coalinga. It's the same shelly matrix which is unlike the STH Bonebed matrix, a fine gray-green silt.
