After doing extensive research on a potential Silurian fossil bed in New Jersey, i made a trip to the site and discovered this fossil! Hopefully, more to come!

I don’t want to say more about the specifics of the location quite yet-

I’d like to actually make sure this place is a fossil bed, and that this one find wasn’t just a fluke.

I also have to talk more with the land owners, ensure they’d be okay with the site becoming publicly known, as well as work out if they are okay with me doing some more extensive searching and digging in the bedrock.

But nonetheless, I wanted to share the find itself because I am so so so happy, as this is my first fossil (and potential site) that I’ve ever found by doing my own geological research, and I wanted to share it here.

I hope once I speak with the landowners more, as well as find at least one more fossil to confirm it's not a fluke,  I can get permission to post the location!

Please do not post the location even if the landowners say it's OK. Too many people are ruining fossil locales. Keep it to yourself.

I think i’ll take that advice into consideration. I’d hate for this site to become trampled by people. It was so beautiful there (middle of the woods)

I think if i find anything of interest i’d be happier to let a museum know instead.

It is ok to show us your finds as we all like to see what others are finding. Unfortunately the uptick in New fossihunters has grown tremendously. There are those with no sense of etiquette and will come in and destroy a site, in the hopes of fame and glory. Then the land owners will close it for everyone. So publicly posting new sites for everyone to see is considered a big no no.

Site stewardship is, ever increasingly, a more important issue with the rise in popularity of fossil hunting.

Publicly sharing sites on a website, visited by 1000's of unregistered users on a daily basis would be extremely poor stewardship.

Sharing the site selectively, with people you can trust not to abuse your generosity,  is a much better way to go about it. ;)

That said, your brachiopod impression looks simillar to Tropidoleptus sp.

I tend to agree with Tim on this one , sharing your knowledge is a good thing . With a trusted good steward of the land and a peer or two can make for a more pleasant outing. ( IMO )  However your site your honey hole :thumbsu: thanks for sharing pics with us.
