Uncle Siphuncle
I have about 20 Sphenodiscus ammonites (Maastrichtian, Escondido Fm) whose geodized chambers are partially filled with crystals. Can anyone suggest a shop in the US that is set up with a large enough diameter, thin blade required to cut 4-10 inch ammonites, then polish them with a Vibra Lap or similar? I'm open to shops as well as private lapidary enthusiasts. Of course the cheaper the better. Thanks! Grüße, Daniel A. Wöhr aus Südtexas "To the motivated go the spoils." tracer
if you get someone to cut something for you, try to make sure they've got a nice blade properly set up in the saw. there can be quite a waste of material and extra hassle in polishing when the blade isn't right. Uncle Siphuncle
Thanks guys - I'll follow up. I was planning on having just a couple worked on first before committing the entire lot to one person with whom I have no experience. Grüße, Daniel A. Bootsie
Hmmm............... I might have to invest in a lapidary now. Been using a wet saw with a 10" blade and dry diamond pads to expose my fossils, but there's a limit to how well they will polish up.
