Hunting trip for Carboniferous crinoids (Ukraine)

Svetlana

Recommended Posts

Hello to all.
Photos from several trips of the past years.
Probably, the age of these finds is the Kasimovian stage of the Carboniferous period (307 Ma).
Despite the fact that many fragments of the crinoids lie on a large area, whole lilies were found only in a small "lens" about 7 * 7 meters in size.
Finds from this lens are in the second part of the publication.

Impressive! It looks like collectors have been exploiting and creating these exposures for a long time. Have you been able to identify your finds?

Wow is right.  Unfortunately I am not familiar with material from the other side of the pond.  It would take some research to determine what you have.

Wow! Amazing finds! but then everyone posting before me also said that. So something completely different.

I hope you had a wheel barrow or cart to haul those beauties!  The panels are surreal.

Two ideas come to mind. One - these look very much like Mayan, Olmec and Aztec burial tomb offering of beads, ornaments, and jewelry buried with royalty.

The other thought is that they also look like something the Swiss artist, H.R. Giger, would have created in the Aliens movie anthology as some ancient origins of those scariest nightmares he created.

Please post more images when you're satisfied with the prep work, preservation and display of some of them. So cool!

PS- I pray for and support your country in this time of trial and hope you and yours are safe. This pic was taken a week ago during a new moon astrophotography session. Look at my car decal. Slava Ukraini!PXL_20230714_054108212.NIGHT.thumb.jpg.2bd198ea8a389c8f35b4ef97d842e788.jpg

Geroyam Slava!

Thank you :)

I will try to find samples that were not sold or traded; perhaps something has not yet been prepared and it will be possible to take good photographs.

Have a nice day

@Svetlana, I am in the process of cleaning up some crinoids that I had recently found from the Waldron Shale. I have been impressed with my discoveries UNTIL I SAW YOUR POSTING. Wow is all I can say and hope to see more photos with time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As SPrice says, I am in full support of Ukraine and hope a quick resolution to the invasion will happen soon. Good Luck.

@SPrice , Where are your astrophotography photos? We would love to see them!!!!

@Svetlana, do you know the geological formation these crinoids come from?  I can try to see if I can find some publications if I have that information.

@minnbuckeye "Where are your astrophotography photos? We would love to see them!!!!"   Okay, here's 2 shots. I really don't do a lot of social media stuff. Only TFF and EarthSky dot Org. where I sometimes post astro pic.

@Svetlana, please forgive the interruption with some star pics.   This first one was taken off I-80 west of Salt Lake City nearing Wendover, NV, which has fossil ammonite beds nearby. The green and magenta sky is known as airglow. It's there but very difficult to see with human eyes on earth.  Similar to Aurora but different. No magnetic field involved.

And this is The Galactic Core of our Milky Way. With several open star clusters visible plus a few nebulae, namely, Lagoon and Trifid above it. The super massive Black Hole in the very center of the galaxy is near the bottom center just right of the dust lane shaped like "< ".  All the brown and dark stuff is dirt... properly called the Dust Lanes.

Again....WOW!...Such great preservation, preparation and beautiful specimen!

I still see Mayan burial jewelry...beads and necklaces in this fossil plate. Probably because I researched Mayan ceramics a good part of this year to understand the glyphics on the codex pottery while replicating the cacao drinking vases.  Mainly they just give a date and 'this is Jaguar Bird's cacao drinking cup'.

But anyway... great images & the closeup videos are fantastic!

Here's a picture of another artistic interest of mine.

All you see, I created.
