Mystery Out of Place Fossil?

Recommended Posts

Hi again. I have no idea about this rock that I found on the Beach at Lyme Regis.

It stood out initially due to the unusual colour. It is rusty brown, whereas all the surrounding material was grey or shale.

I thought it was manmade before further inspection showed up fossil rocks embedded into it.

Then there are layers that look like wood, but stones would not be in wood.

I thought maybe a coprolite, but not like any coprolite I have ever seen.

Can anyone help identify this? so I can keep or discard it, as it's quite big. Thanks, Jes.

Can't see any signs of fossils here.

A conglomerate, possibly an igneous conglomerate where lava has caught up some pebbles.

I think I might have the worst fossil collection in the world. :(

Something has rusted and enclosed some pebbles?

I'm making a habit of collecting debris. I think I will smash it up a bit before I bin it. There are a couple of interesting bits sticking out. Thanks, Jes.

Don't know which side you were on but the side with the garbage dump tends to produce some interesting conglomerations of metal/clay/rock/very old refuse. I have some interesting globs from that east beach, I would be curious if it sets off a metal detector.

We all start off collecting things that are interesting but are not what we think they are.

I still do, on occasion.

But slowly, we learn and tend to pick up a higher percentage of the good stuff amd a little less of the junk!

Keep going! A good find is always just around the corner.
