Fish teeth?

Elmo

Recommended Posts

I find these little black shiny round things at Purse State Park. Some of them a ball shaped, some are elongated, and some of them are kinda squared off and flatter than others. My guess is that they might be fish teeth, but I could be way of here. Any help will help me sleep at night. Thank you in advance.

I believe you have a mix of something like drum teeth and phosphate nodules.  For instance, the circled one looks more like a fish tooth to me:

Cool, now I can separate the teeth out and stick the nodules in the little rock collection I’ve started. Thank you very much for the help.

The pharyngeal teeth should be smooth and very shiny.  The bottoms may be completely flat or have a hole in them.  Some may even have a brown ring on the bottom that almost looks like a Cheerio.  The ones with dimples, very irregular shapes, less shine, etc. look like phosphate.

Sorry for the color of this picture, but it was one I had on my phone that was taken through a magnifying lens.  You can at least see the "Cheerio" look on a couple of these (yes, other fish teeth are mixed in):

This last one looks like sea bream family.
