How to recognize a internal mold?

I bought this spiriferida some time ago and I got a question about it.

How you can recognize if the fossil is the shell or the internal mold of the shell?

Your brachiopod has shell material.

In general, internal molds will be the same color and texture as the rest of the matrix, they usually don't have as fine detail preserved as pieces of the shell, but will also show some of the internal structures which are not present on the outside of the shell, such as the hinge structure and muscle attachment points.

You can also look at the commissure, in pieces with shell material you'll see that the two valves are distinct pieces, where in an internal mold you will not have that

Hope that helps
