Bronzviking
Hi All, I found this chunk of fossilized bone on the beach in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA. It's approximately 2" x 1" and appears to be broken off on both ends. It has distinct features, like a straight spine down the middle that tapers on one end and divides or forks into two bones on the other end. My only guess is a part of a Marine mammal Vertebra? All IDs are appreciated. Thanks Lynn Edited February 11 by Bronzviking
Brevicollis
I would say its from a aquatic living animal like a Turtle or a whale, because of the high bone density. What bone it exactly is, i dont know (maybe part of a Turtle's femur ?) Nice find ! Bronzviking
I thought it looked like a piece of this whale lumbar below marked in red. What do you think ? @Harry Pristis @Shellseeker@Plantguy
Plantguy
Bone ID's arent my strong suit and I just dont know. Could be a process of some sort I suppose. I defer to those experts/those more familiar. Hopefully Jack/Harry and others will have some real insight! Regards, Chris
Coco
Hi, I think this bone is too fragmented and worn out to connect it to a genus or species. Bronzviking
I came across this pic today and it looks like the upper piece of what I found. A Florida Tapir Vertebrae. Do you agree my Florida guys? @PrehistoricFlorida @Harry Pristis
