New Members Boe Posted March 20 New Members Share Posted March 20 Hi everyone, first time poster. I found this rock at Blue Beach, Nova Scotia near the water line. At first I thought it was an organic specimen, like perhaps seaweed or roots growing on a rock, but on closer inspection it appears to be mineral. Ive never seen anything like this before. It looks a lot like petrified roots, but I figure thats unlikely. Does anyone know what this is? The last picture is from a magnifying app.
Rockwood
I think this is essentially coal. I've seen similar pieces across the bay at Joggins that looked more like lycopod cortex. I'm not sure if these are plant fibers or minerals though.
westcoast
I agree with @Rockwood, fossil wood, coal with some additional late diagenetic minerals.
New Members Boe Posted March 21 Author New Members Share Posted March 21 Thank you very much! I never knew of diagenesis and it answers a lot of questions I had. I havent been to Joggins yet either, definitely plan to take a trip when they open again.
Carl
I agree with coal. And I feel pretty sure that the marks that resemble plants have a merely accidental resemblance to plants. Many phenomena in Nature mimic plant growth.
DPS Ammonite
Similar coal (carbonized plant stems) from the Promontory Butte deposits near Christopher Creek, Arizona shows similar structures. The white to tan branching areas were found to be gypsum. 1 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.
