New Members Irinotecan Posted April 7 New Members Share Posted April 7 Disclaimer: Just an amateur fossil hunter. Whatever facts I think I know about fossils come from research done for coaching Div B Science Olympiad. Found in Schoarie County, NY, The matrix is from a shale layer between the limestones from the Kalkberg or Becraft formations. Found on the ground at the foot of a small cliff, so I don't know where it fell from. I am posting dry and wet pictures. Is this a crinoid holdfast? Kane
Doesn't quite look like one, but you will want in future to use a ruler or tape measure rather than a medallion with some guy with pigtails. 2 ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer

Rockwood
It could be a poorly preserved lobolith, but I agree that it can't really be confidently identified as such.
Fossildude19
I am going against the grain here, and going to say it is possibly a crinoid holdfast. The guide I have for Schoharie that lists crinoid species and mentions Aspidocrinus scutelliformis. 3 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Jeffrey P
I agree with Fossildude19, that it could be a floating crinoid holdfast. I have a few from Schoharie County (Lower Devonian-Kalkberg Formation-Helderberg Group) and they look similar to yours.
