Real or paint Dragonfly ?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hello, I saw this Dragonfly from Solnhofen for sale today and wondered If its real or painted, as it has only two wings (I remember that Dragonflys have normally four and not a set of horns) and it appears to bend with the rock underneath. Its also only one picture to maybe hide some details, so im pretty sure its fake. Sice : 7,5×14 cm

Oh gosh, the dragonfly wasn't even painted by an artist but a bungler
This dragonfly (from China) is 100% fake (only the Lycoptera are real), but at least it was painted (or printed?) properly and the artist had some knowledge of anatomy. At least the artist made an effort here:

I fell for it, anyway.

Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).

The dendrites on the slab sure looks real enough to me.

I'm not sure why dragonflies are so much more in demand than other insects. You can find tons of insects with large well preserved wings but similar dragonflies are 5-10x more expensive.

Maybe I should combine these together. Ink the next dragonfly that hits my car grille and press it onto this shale with dendrites. Lots of room and the car damaged dragonfly will look very fossilly. Maybe...

I should charge a lot for it, too 😁

Just kidding, guys.

Reality? - so sad that this is a thing to fake and sell.

Sounds actually like a funny Idea... An interesting experiment.

But please use it as a display piece for you and dont sell it!

I actually dont know, why Dragonflys are so insanely expensive, but I think they are great pieces for display, and very coveted amongst the collectors. Or good ones are just stupidly rare...

There does seem to be a tendency for a lot of fake Dragonflies

Maybe it's the name ???

And they are quite impressive insects.

Yeah, it's the name, they look great, they are bigger than most insects, most people have seen them and can relate to the fossil, and they are often brightly coloured now, so one can imagine the colours of your specimen..........

Lots of reasons.

I'm in Nashville for my daughter's graduation from Vanderbilt and the cicada double brood hatch is in full S(w)ing! Millions already. Thought I might bag a few dead ones and practice cicada fossils. After a couple hundred prints I should be as good as these dragonfly prints.

You're correct! I just grabbed the first cicada fossil image for the humorous response about these unfortunate forgeries. And I thought fake watches were bad. Some people have lost or never had scruples, morals nor integrity. Greed for money....just sad.

PS... Oh,  you meant the resin coated one? I think that is modern in dyed resin...not an actual fossilized cicada. That is a cheap auction site special creation. The one in matrix is legitimate. Synapocossus sciacchitanoae .

Yeah, the one in Daohugou matrix with the small clams. I haven't seen any forgeries of those yet but I'm sure they're out there.
