I've been looking around a lot lately for rocks and fossils.. so might update the thread a bunch with new pictures & the same question.

Prefer leave location out of it right now, but it's in Europe...

Is this potentially a fossilised bone or only some rock?

I need to buy a brush to clear out dirt real quick for images. Leaving the rocks & or bones back where I find em...

Welcome! I agree that it looks to have a granular structure that indicates rock instead of bone.

thanks.

I found a few rocks around here covered in what looks like plates or skin of different kinds.. Is it probable it is a rock thing or potential fossilised shell, or "armoured plate" exterior of an animal?

Here is one I found today:

Couldn't get good pictures of what it looks like in the front cause it's covered with moss..

Poor focus on these photos unfortunately, I'll get better soon.

There's gonna be some beginner type of images and questions here..

I'll take a look around the forum, it seems like a good one. Perfect for my new hobby.

That seems like a great idea...  I have been hunting fossils for 15 years.  Over that time in MY hunting area, I have picked up tons of rock and tons of bone. I figured out the differences in shape, color, texture by experience.

I just did a search for the word "bone" on TFF == 456xx hits. You could start your education by doing the search and thinking how is this bone different from rock and how is this rock different from bone... It took me 15 years, but I believe you could figure it out faster...

Better to start a new topic for each piece, more people will see it.

I have taken so much pictures the past week or so gonna keep it to one for now, not to spam down the forum... but thanks. If I want some more opinions on some specific one I will make a new.

I have so many questions too on how some things have formed in the rocks...

Trying to watch a bunch of geology, paleontology, etc videos every day, and been looking at websites, searching images several times every day etc... There's so much to learn.

You mentioned above that you preferred to leave the location out. I would however suggest to you that you at least give the general area of the find in your next post. This makes it much easier for the experts here to determine the stratigraphy, which in turn makes it easier to get an id.

Two ideas for us to be able to help you:

1: You seem eager to learn , so that is a good thing.  Your first line of research should probably be: are fossils found in your area. You will get led down too many empty trails if you just watch videos and such about general geology and paleontology.  Great education, but will not be specific enough to answer your question about specific rocks in your area (which by the way is all I'm seeing in your pictures, nothing obviously fossil).

2. For us to help you, you are going to have to be more specific than "Europe".  I'm not saying X,Y coordinates, but Europe is a large area with a wide variety of geology.  A country, an area, something so we can help you identify the geology, age range we might be dealing with, and any potential for fossils.

The surface of that boulder has been etched by the lichen growing on it. Google lichen and read the Wikipedia entry. Interesting stuff lichens are.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
