It isn't pottery.   It's still stuck in matrix, and the item is consistently homogenous looking, with the matrix.   This looks to me like an actinocerid type cephalopod.  The area around Fort McMurray is mostly Cretaceous in age, but  does have some Devonian exposures, namely the Devonian Waterways Formation that outcrops along the Athabasca River.       Image link
