Real or fake turtle. Looks weird.

Recommended Posts

Hello, I saw this turtle fossil on auction today and wondered If its real or not. It looks weird and it was placed in an extra matrix which I only know was used on some pieces from Messel. The turtle is apparently 47 million years old and from western europe and an "Allaeochelys".

@oilshale, do you have an idea and opinion on this ?

Its 35 cm long and 21 cm wide.

These turtles are often offered, but unfortunately I have not had a single one in my hands. The carapace could be real, the head is certainly fake. The turtles are often found headless (and then “touched up”). They are offered under the name Anosteira maomingensis (Eocene of Maoming, Guangdong).
The matrix seems to be also real: 'The vertebrate remains come from the Youkanwo Formation, which consists of mainly brownblack oil shale, deposited in a semi-deep lake environment under a temperate to subtropical climate.'

Agree, the head looks carved, shell appears real.
