I am new here and not well educated on fossils.  I love fossils and rocks and the such.  This piece belonged to my parents.  I'm trying to figure out what type of fish it is.  I'm also hoping this is a real fossil.  The piece it is embedded  into some type of slab of rock.  I appreciate any type of help on this item.  I know there are no appraisals here but does anyone know where I would take it to get some type of idea?  I live in the Columbia, SC area.  Thank you.

What size is it? Either Knightia eocaena or Gosiutichthys parvus. I would guess Gosiutichthys.

Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).

It is about 4.25 inches long and about 1.5 inches from the top of the fin to the bottom of the belly.

I agree, this is a Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation.

In terms of size it is Knightia, and not Gosiutichthys.

Gosiutichthys can be distinguished from Knightia by the fin rays of the anal fin: Gosiutichtys has 9 - 11 fin rays - Knightia 13-15.

Thank you all for your help.  My parents lived in California but traveled to the Pacific Northwest and Colorado, Wyoming and those states.  I'm not sure where my step-dad got it but he collected all kinds of stuff for years.  Now I at least know what it is.  Thanks a million!

Would I be correct in guessing that the preservation looks like that seen in the area of Lake Gosiute?

Could be.

The Green River Formation meanders a bit throughout the Wyoming/Colorado/Utah area, as far as I know. So it could be from a number of different areas.

I am not personally familiar with the preservation at other localities, other than the ones in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
