you have it upside down.  This is the front end (chin) of a lower jaw of an oreodont.

What is the suture/fusing along the center for? Is that a young animal feature?

That is where the left and right jaw come together.  This is an adult animal with a strong suture.  In a youthful one, the suture might be much weaker, but to be honest, I would have to go look at any young oreos I have to answer that for sure.  It could just as well be that they are born with a strong suture.
