Another Dimetrodon vertebra!

Recommended Posts

Today I finally got back out to my Dimetrodon site to see if spring storms revealed anything new.  After several hours sweating my butt off, I spied the edge of a vert peaking out of the ground! Not only was it a great find, it was still in situ, which means I have a horizon to excavate! This make 2 verts very close together and many sail spine segments. Fingers crossed there's more waiting to be uncovered.

My attempts at identifying it, looks like it might be the axis vert. It appears to to have a very pinched line down the center,  not a base for a sail spine. Although I'm not hopeful that there is a skull there, I should have already seen major parts on the surface.

Sorry, forgot to include, this is upper Wellington fm, Noble county, OK, USA

Awesome stuff! Can’t wait to see you find more! Hopefully there’s more of the animal waiting to be found.

Out of curiosity, what are the circled elements? Are they associated with the vert, sail spine, or just misc. bone fragments?

I collected all 3 of those.  YES!  the 2 larger pieces are zygapophyses and were reattached to the body of the vert.  Compare the picture of it in the field with the one next to the photo scale. and you can see them attached.  The tiny piece hasnt found a home yet. May or may not belong.

Side note 1 - One of the still missing zygopophyses is a fresh break, so I believe its nearby.  I plan on sweeping and collecting EVERYTHING below that spot to sort at home for it.

Side note 2- Chris Flis of the Whiteside museum believes this to be a pre-sacral vert based on the lateral processes.

UPDATE! I found the missing xygopophysis to my Dimetrodon vertebra. Oddly, it wasn't the one I was looking for!

I went back to my site and collected about 2.5 gallons of pea sized gravel, washed, screened and searched. It was literally in the last handful left before I found it.

But this one fit the "ugly" break that looked old and rough. So, I hope the last one is still waiting for my to find it. More buckets of gravel to search!

A missing zyg found

I thought it would be this missing one

but it matched to the other end. Here it is reattached.
