Might this be an actinocerida type cephalopod ?
I saw one in a topic in this forum and thought that they may match.

But I could be wrong here, im by no means an expert.

So lets hear what other members have to say.

Are good signatures really that important ?

I think it's most likely a mold of Sigillaria cortex. I doubt it's the sort of thing that folks will be too worried about, but the laws there are quite strict.

Sigillaria

I've googled it and none of the pictures that I saw of them matched. How did you came to this ID ? Can you show a picture of "the right one" so even I know why its one ?

That would be nice !

I've collected a similar piece with more of the actual material left in the mold from a coal shale dump. It's unlikely that the look will come up in an image search precisely because the leaf bases and associated features are not evident in the inner layers of cortex at the base of the trunk. That is where I suspect this material originated.

May be interesting to know, where in Nova Scotia this was found, as there are many deposits with different ages and species.

The Silurian

Probably close to the carboniferous according to your maps.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
