New Members CharlieBuffett Posted Saturday at 07:13 AM New Members Share Posted Saturday at 07:13 AM (edited) Hi all, Id love to hear some informed opinions. According to the seller, this mammoth mandibula is from Ukraine and from Miocene epoch. Based on my research, this seems highly improbable, but Im conscious I know very little. Consequently, could you please help me understand: 1) if it is genuine 2) what period this is likely from 3) what mammoth species this is Many thanks gents! dries85
Hey, as i found my first Mammoth tooth last week, i did some research the past days.. so let's give it a try 1. It looks genuine to me and in quite outstanding shape 2. It would be very unlikely to be Miocene of age tho, rather (Middle-)Pleistocene to Late-Holocene 3. Mammuthus primigenius or woolly mammoth would be very likely if it's actually found in Ukraine or either it's Early-Pleistocene ancestor Mammuthus trogontherii or steppe mammoth. Any size indication could help as the second species would be much larger. I'm definitely not an expert, so don't take my word for it 😅 just trying to help with what i've learned so far.. Good luck, Dries
New Members CharlieBuffett Posted Saturday at 11:42 AM Author New Members Share Posted Saturday at 11:42 AM Thanks Dries for your reply! I agree that Miocene is very unlikely but I lack tangible facts to be sure. The dimensions are roughly 40 x 40x 50 cm. The seller claims it's Mammuthus sp, is it what you refer to as steppe mammoth ?
