Jaw with Teeth and More Mystery Fossils - North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Thanks for stopping by! Last week I was on my yearly North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina beach trip. This year was great for fossils, we found well over 100 specimens. Because we found so much variety, I have a large number of fossils I'd love to have confirmation or help IDing. Some I have an idea on and others I have no clue. Any information on my finds would be greatly appreciated.

#1 Jaw and teeth, but to what?

image.thumb.jpeg.be08a5a3413e984d9f0a6efaea290ca1.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.282f0999e5f55addbcec9ee9892676b1.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.d230310242170fb9790bfeb56db59b0a.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.c8b97d19251b4fb7b17ddc57da1b0579.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.0fc127c257e695114c24f24db30e856a.jpeg

#3 Are either of these Coprolites? The first example has fossil sand stars or similar within. Both are just over an inch long.

Hmm I couldn’t find anything similar when I googled it. It’s such a creepy looking tooth, looks like a lower human tooth 🤣 obviously not a human tooth though.

If you’re having trouble making out the Hemi, take a look at lower hemi teeth. You can see the root and crown shape matches the lower teeth, and the enamel is almost totally stripped off.

You found a lot of fantastic stuff in just 1 week at North Myrtle Beach, SC.

I hunt that same area, usually in front of the Maritime, just south of Cherry Grove.

I’m trying not to overlap too much with what’s already been identified:

#5 Part of a fish neurocranium

#6 Part of a  neurocranium, I suspect fish

#7 Hyperostotic fish neurocranium. I think there is a good chance that this is a partial “Emmon’s fish tooth.” These neurocraniums are brittle and part of the exterior surface could have broken off to expose the foramina.

#10 Chilomycterus sp. mouth plate (It’s a genus of Burrfish)

#15 Posterior part of a sea robin neurocranium, see link below:

https://www.thefossilforum.com/topic/24603-searobin-skull-plates/

#19 Part of a fish neurocranium. I have specimens like this that clearly show the markings of a sea Robin neurocranium. I think this may represent a central section of the posterior part of a sea robin neurocranium.
