EroHed
This bone was found in a bayou here in Adams County, MS along with an identified Bovid Metacarpal. Someone outside of the forum said it was the mandible of a huge mammal. Can someone help identifying it? Thanks in advance.
Coco
I’m afraid it’s not a mandible. The shape is very rough, and you don’t see the teeth or the holes for the teeth. Coco Could it possibly be the head of a Mastodon's mandible?
Coco
I’ve already made my opinion clear. In a mammalian mandible, you find the locations of the teeth if they’re not on it anymore. Here there is no hole for teeth, anything. And frankly, with so few remains and so small, I don’t see how to say that it’s something of a mastodon, let alone a mandible. Besides, with your photos I am unable to define if you have a single object or if there are several. Fossildude19
Unidentifiable chunk of bone. Not sure you can say much more than that. It kind of resembles the articulating part of a lower jaw, but also looks a bit similar to a bit of pelvis. Chunk -o there, ... in my opinion. Mahnmut
Hi, here is a 3d scan of a Mastodon mandible, go ahead and compare. https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/mastodon-mandible-vcu-3d-7645-69a88126b7e1487eba0ae83abffc9ffa Its possible, but hard to say with such a small fragment. For the small part of mandible you propose, I would not expect to see tooth alveoli, so thats no point against it. Could also be a proximal radius. Size will narrow down the options, but if it is possible to tell Mastodon from Mammuth for example, I can not tell.
