Fossildude19
Where in New Zealand was this found? New Zealand is a large place, with lots of different aged stratigraphy, and location down to the county or department level would be useful in helping us ID this item. supertramp
very interesting piece; could you add a pic showing the circular section on the right of picture n. 4?

supertramp
Sorry, I can't help you, but the piece is really strange and interesting. In terms of description, it seems that flattened crystals (?) have formed from a central cylindrical nucleus (in which a granular crystalline structure can be glimpsed). I'm not sure it has a biologic origin. You could test if it reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid. In any case I would take it to the nearest geology/paleontology department. Ciao. debivort
If I had to guess I'd go with a piece of crinoid / echinoderm, since they are often very geometric.

That's what i was thinking, a calyx of crinoid. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." Doctor Mud
Sorry a bit late here. That’s a piece of Waiparaconus There is still debate over exactly what type of creature it was: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24673757/ 1
