Hello, I am new to the group and found a very large vertebrae on the beach in Nicaragua. 21 inches across by 8.5 inches thick. Large foremen opening on top. Curious for any information.

Apologies for the rudimentary measuring device. I’m here on a surf trip and never expected to find this specimen. My guess is 60lbs.

Too big to take back home…….

thanks, RR

Nice.  My question is is it modern?  What is the result of a burn test?

Unfamiliar with burn test. Is it used to verify bone vs fossil?

The burn test is the application of flame to the specimen. It tests the presence of collagen in bone, If collagen is present (usually denoted by a horrid smell!), then it is likely modern as fossils do not typically preserve collagen.

Yes, you have clearance to use fire! :D
